The Summer Arts Institute brings together K-12 classroom teachers, teaching artists, and school administrators to promote academic achievement, equity, and equal access through an in-depth learning experience in the arts. Institute participants engage in an intensive workshop acquiring tools and gaining first-hand experience in the artistic process. Areas of concentration (focus) include: (visual arts, music, dance, and drama).
Summer Arts Institute Participant outcomes:
"The experiences in the SAI have renewed my enthusiasm and passions in the arts ad have increased my confidence in applying the arts within my classroom. I now have a larger array of tools to engage my students in actively learning. My perspective of arts forms and approaches to art has broadened, and that will help me meet the diverse needs of my students." - Ava Kuin, PVUSD Kindergarten teacher, 2019 participant
"I learned about the Studio Habits of Mind and the value of arts integration for deepening student knowledge and increasing their motivation and curiosity about the content area. I also learned how easy it can be!" - Kim Dudley, Mountain Kindergarten teacher, 2019 participant
"This week I was able to connect and remember that through experiencing the joys and pleasures of art ourselves, we will be better at sharing and transferring that joy to our students in a more meaningful and authentic way. I was also reminded to respect all learning differences, give more choice, and opportunity, and praise more on the effort and participation." - Rebekah Freels, PVUSD VAPA teacher, 2019 participant
"This is my second year attending and each year I leave feeling inspired and have a toolkit with useful projects that I can implement in my classroom." - Marie Carrington, SLVUSD sixth grade teacher, 2019 participant
